WPPA travel is for players who play baseball at an advanced skill level and would like to intensify their development through additional training and a schedule of 30-40 games against other travel teams outside of WPPA through league play, tournaments and, for 12U teams, a tournament week in Cooperstown, NY (late July or August).  Skill development begins in January and continues through April when games begin.

WPPA will offer two 12U teams in 2020 Red and Black.  Players may tryout for one or both teams -- if both, please sign up for each tryout separately.

To sign up for the tryout, visit the 12U SignUpGenius Tryout Page to register your player.

  • What’s the difference between the Red and Black teams?  The Red team will be coached by the Chicago Baseball Consortium founded by Tug Gillingham.  The Black team will continue to be parent coached by Chris Gaietto.  Both teams will train together with the Chicago Baseball Consortium’s staff in the winter and play similar schedules.  Winter training will take place local to Welles Park, including at the CIBC Fire Pitch.
  • Tryout attire and equipment:  Baseball pants/belt, cleats, jersey or performance shirt, baseball hat, athletic cup, batting helmet, glove (multiple if desired – e.g., catcher, 1B) and bat.  Catchers may bring their own catcher gear.
  • Do I have to currently be registered at Welles:  No, but all players on both teams will be registered with Welles for 2020 and will have to play in the WPPA House League’s Major or Senior Division.
  • How do I know if my child is 12U eligible?  Players must be born on or after May 1, 2007 to be eligible for the 12U teams.
  • What if we can’t make either of these dates?  We ask that you do your best to make one of the two tryout dates offered but also understand that conflicts do arise.  Please let us know in advance if you cannot make one of these dates and we will work with you to find an alternate date.
  • How much travel will be involved? Most travel will be local but there may be 1 or 2 tournaments that require families to drive to the destination.  The 12U teams will play in the Mid-Suburban Baseball League plus 3-5 tournaments between April and August.  It is tradition for the 12U teams to play a tournament in Cooperstown, New York after the house season ends (late July or August).
  • What days will we play and practice?  Travel is typically played Wednesday evenings or Sunday mornings.  This schedule has been designed to minimize conflicts with house practices and games.  There will also be one practice per week during the regular season.  A full committment to games and practices is expected.
  • How much will it cost?  Total cost for winter training, practices, games and tournament attendance will be approximately $2,500 for the Red team (paid head coach) and $2,000 for the Black team for (both teams will conduct fundraising efforts throughout the year).  Cost estimates do not include travel and lodging at tournaments.  Welles Park will consider accommodating families of players who demonstrate financial need.
  • What is the cost to tryout?  We encourage you to register in advance.

    • 12U Red: $20 for advanced payment (Zelle to Patrick Wigmore,  ) or $25 at the door.

    • 12U Black:  $10 at the door.

  • How many kids will make the team?  Approximately 12 kids will be chosen for each team.
