2020 WPPA 13U All-Star Travel Tryouts

Two Thursday Options

Jul 18, 7:00 - 8:30pm
Jul 25, 6:00 - 7:30pm

River Park (Foster/Francisco)

WPPA travel is for players who play baseball at an advanced skill level and would like to intensify their development through additional training and a schedule of 30-40 games against other travel teams outside of WPPA. Skill development begins in January and continues through April when games begin.

WPPA will offer either one or two 13U teams in 2020 (depending on the level of interest) and this is a joint tryout for both teams.

To sign up for the tryout, do the following two steps:

  1. Visit the SignUpGenius Tryout Page to register your player for ONE of the two tryout dates.
  2. Send $15 in advance to August Schupp via Zelle or PayPal to, or via Venmo to @ahschupp ($20 if collected at the tryout, cash only)

Please note on the signup if you are trying out for the position of catcher.  We will have a special evaluation session at the tryout for these players.

  • How many teams will there be and who will coach them?  WPPA will offer one or two 13U teams in 2020 depending upon interest.   At least one team will be coached by the Chicago Baseball Consortium (CBC) founded by Tug Gillingham.  If a second team forms, it may also be coached by CBC, or by a parent.   Both teams will train together with the Chicago Baseball Consortium’s staff in the winter and play similar schedules.  Winter training will take place local to Welles Park, including at the CIBC Fire Pitch.
  • Tryout attire and equipment:  Baseball pants/belt, cleats, jersey or performance shirt, baseball hat, athletic cup, batting helmet, glove (multiple if desired – e.g., catcher, 1B) and bat.  Catchers may bring their own catcher gear.
  • Do I have to currently be registered at Welles:  No, but all players on both teams will be registered with Welles for 2020 and will have to play in the WPPA House League’s Senior Division.
  • How do I know if my child is 13U eligible?  Players must be born on or after May 1, 2006 to be eligible for the 13U teams.‚Äč
  • What if we can’t make either of these dates?  We ask that you do your best to make one of the two tryout dates offered but also understand that conflicts do arise.  Please let us know in advance if you cannot make one of these dates and we will work with you to find an alternate date.
  • How much travel will be involved? Most travel will be local but there may be 1 or 2 tournaments that require families to drive or fly to the destination.  The 13U team(s) will play in the Mid-Suburban Baseball League plus 3-5 tournaments throughout the year.  It is tradition for the 13U teams to play a tournament in Omaha during the College World Series in June (after school is out).
  • What days will we play?  Travel is typically played Wednesday evenings or Sunday mornings.  This schedule has been designed to minimize conflicts with house practices and games.
  • How much will it cost?  TTotal cost for winter training, practices, games and tournament attendance will be approximately $1,500 per player.  Cost estimates do not include travel and lodging at tournaments.  Welles Park will consider accommodating families of players who demonstrate financial need.
  • What is the cost to tryout?  The tryout fee is $15 for advanced payment and registration and $20 at the door.  We encourage you to register in advance.
  • How many kids will make the team?  Approximately 12 kids will be chosen for each team.
