WPPA travel is for players who play baseball at an advanced skill level and would like to intensify their development through additional training and a schedule of 30-40 games against other travel teams outside of WPPA. Skill development begins in January and continues through April when games begin.
WPPA will offer two 9U teams in 2020 – Red and Black. Players may try out for one or both teams -- if both, please sign up for each tryout separately.
To sign up for the tryout, visit the 9U SignUpGenius Tryout Page to register your player.
Please note on the signup if you are trying out for the position of catcher. We will have a special evaluation session at the tryout for these players.
What’s the difference between the Red and Black teams? The 9U Black team will be coached by the Chicago Baseball Consortium founded by Tug Gillingham. The 9U Red team will continue to be coached by Matt Rich. Both teams will train together with the Chicago Baseball Consortium’s staff in the winter and play similar schedules. Winter training will take place local to Welles Park, including at the CIBC Fire Pitch.
Tryout attire and equipment: Baseball pants/belt, cleats, jersey or performance shirt, baseball hat, athletic cup, glove (multiple if desired – e.g., catcher, 1B) and bat. Catchers may bring their own catcher gear.
How do I know if my child is 9U eligible? Players must be born on or after May 1, 2010 to be eligible for the 9U teams.
What if we can’t make either of these dates? We ask that you do your best to make the tryout dates offered but also understand that conflicts do arise. Please let us know in advance if you cannot make one of these dates and we will work with you to find an alternate date.
How much will it cost? Total cost for winter training, practices, games and tournament attendance will be approximately $1,600 for the Black team (paid head coach) and $1,000 for the Red team. Cost estimates do not include travel and lodging at tournaments. Welles Park will consider accommodating families of players who demonstrate financial need.
