How to Become an Umpire

The WPPA feels strongly that the quality of umpiring directly affects the level of play as well as the conduct of the coaches, parents and spectators. Accordingly, we have spent much time, effort and money to insure that all individuals umpiring in WPPA games are well-trained.
To that end, the WPPA sponsors an umpire-training course each year.   This course is typically 4 consecutive 2 hour sessions held on Wednesday nights in March:
2020 Umpire Training Sessions
  • Wednesdays Mar 4, 11, 18, 25
  • 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Green Briar Park Field House
All umpires must turn 13 years old on or before April 30, 2020 to be eligible.
The umpire training course is free to participants, provided that they commit to being available to work WPPA games.   The training is conducted by a professional umpire.   We REQUIRE that all umpires that work in the Senior League (where players are ages 13-14) and Liberty League (where players are ages 15-18) be IHSA recognized or certified.   We ALSO REQUIRE that all umpires that work in the Rookie through Major Leagues as well as Softball leagues complete our umpire-training course.
If you are interested in umpiring for the WPPA, fill out the Umpire Registration Online Form  Once you complete the form, you will be added to our mailing list and receive all future mailings and notice of next year's umpire-training schedule.
Please Note - WPPA will need a W9 Form to remit payment to umpires.
